Presented by the Maine Cheese Guild, always the Sunday of Indigenous Peoples Day weekend.

Sunday, October 13th, the Maine Cheese Guild presents the 11th annual Open Creamery Day. 18 Maine creameries around the state will open their doors and their barns, inviting the public to taste award-winning cheeses, meet the animals that make the milk, and tour the creameries to learn about the tradition of Maine cheesemaking. Cheesemaking in Maine has boomed in the last decade with hundreds of cheeses to taste straight from the source. Take in the spectacular sights of the Maine fall foliage and visit a local orchard, brewery, or winery along the way. Each creamery will offer a unique experience. TIPS FOR GETTING APPLES IDENTIFIED

If you have a favorite apple tree and would love to know what kind it is, this is your chance! Visit us at Great Maine Apple Day for help.

Identifying apples is a collaborative process. Our goal is to ID your apple, but we need your help! The more information you give us, the better the chance that we'll be successful in doing an ID.

Bring 3-6 apples per variety. One apple can be deceiving. Six are not.
Put the apples in labeled paper bags. Apples like paper bags better. They sweat and rot quickly in plastic.
Write your contact information on each bag: your name, location of the apple tree, your snail mail address, phone number and email address. The tree location is particularly important to the ID.
The tree itself also holds clues. Do you have a seedling or a grafted tree? If your apple tree is grafted, we should be able to identify it for you. If your apple tree grew from seed, it is new and unique and has no name until you give it one. If you want/can, bring a few photos of the tree. The photos can be taken any time of year, although winter is best. One or two of the photos should be of the whole tree and at least one should be a closeup of the trunk from about ten feet away.
* APPLE DESSERT CONTEST DETAILS

Fall is here, and that means we're craving fresh-baked treats made with Maine apples! Get into the spirit of fall baking by participating in our apple dessert contest. We welcome entries of apple pies, apple crisps, apple cookies, apple donuts ..... anything goes! Entries will be judged on the basis of three criteria: taste, appearance and originality. 50% of ingredients (by volume or weight) must be APPLES!

We'll have a separate category for kids under age 12! Practice your baking skills and have fun in the kitchen. Kids entries will be judged on taste and appearance.

Please arrive with your dessert before 1 p.m. Winners will be announced and prizes distributed at 3 p.m. Email events@mofga.org with any questions.
